A Look Back at Our Successful Events

We believe that participating in events is an important part of our training and development as cadets. The training year has been filled with opportunities for us to develop our skills, learn from experiences, and grow as a team. Below is a list of the events we have participated in during the 2023-2024 training year.

1st Biathlon Try-outs

Cadets interested in trying out for the Biathlon team should attend practices. Final team will be decided mid-October. This will be a run and shoot format.

Practices will be held weekly on Sundays from 0900 to 1600 or as determined by the coach.

Cadets will be learning basic survival skills such are fire building, knot tying and shelter building. Cadet will be transported to the Lessard Lake Outdoor Education Centre by bus Friday evening and sleep indoors. Saturday evening, they will be sleeping in tents outside before returning by bus Sunday afternoon.

Master Cadets from across the region will have an opportunity to further their expedition skills on a multi-day back-country activity. Cadets cannot have any participation limitations.

Cadets will be selling poppies in support of the Legion Poppy Fund. Cadets will be assigned store locations around north Edmonton. Drivers to/from the various locations will be volunteers. Lunch and morning snacks are provided.

Silver Stars & above only will participate in a ceremony laying poppies on the headstones of veterans buried in the field of honor.

 

The ceremony is recorded and broadcast across Canada. Parents are welcome to stay and watch.

Remembrance Day: Location #2 (Light Horse Park)

Cadets will participate in Remembrance Day ceremonies with the South Alberta Light Horse regiment. The ceremony starts at Holy Trinity Church with a small service. The cadets and soldiers will then march through the streets (through Whyte Avenue) to Light Horse Park for the Remembrance Ceremony and the laying of wreaths.

Although the unit does not currently have its own band, cadets that play a musical instrument can participate in one of the music clinics. Cadets interested in practicing with a band (military/brass band or pipe band) should let the staff know in order to get the information for one of the multi-unit band practices in the city.

The fall music clinic focuses on musical instruction as well as music level testing. Cadets must provide their own instrument.

Open House: Reindeer Games

This event is open to the public!

 

Cadets, along with their family and friends, will compete in small group activities to earn points for their troop and claim the coveted annual Reindeer Games Trophy. It’s an evening of teamwork, laughter, and holiday cheer.

 

Participants are also encouraged to contribute to the celebration by bringing a dish for the potluck.

ā€‹

Dress for cadets is civilian clothing.

Soccer Match

ADA Sports Day

Cadets will participate in a Area Discretionary Activity (ADA) Sports Day with cadets from 3 other cadet units. The day will consist of a Sports Tabloid event and several sports games (soccer, handball, kickball, basketball, volleyball, gaga ball)

Visit to Strathcona Mounted Troop

Date: October 21

Due to operational requirement, the visit hours had to be shortened. Parents are welcome to stay and participate in the tour.

Cadets will participate in a Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Familiarization activity with the Strathcona Mounted Troop (check out their website here: https://www.strathconas.ca/strathcona-mounted-troop)

An annual campaign to raise funds...

Poppy Day

Date: November 04

Original Time: drop off @ 0830 | pickup @ 1200

Location: Norwood Legion (11150 82 St)

Cadets will participate in the annual poppy campaign conducted by local Legion Branches. Norwood Legion Branch #178 supports 2051 19th Alberta Dragoons in part through the poppy fund.

 

Cadets are to wear their FULL DRESS UNIFORM with toques, black gloves, and cadet parka.

TWO Remembrance Ceremonies

Remembrance Day

Date: November 11

Cadets will participate in a Remembrance Day ceremony.

Cadets will need to sign up to only one of the two ceremonies.

Cadet Visit to SALH Lines

Date: January 24

Location: Brigadier James Curry Jefferson Armoury [11630, 109th Street]

Cadets will participate in a visit to the South Alberta Light Horse regimental lines. The SALH have a great programmed prepared for our visit!

We will be joined by cadets from 3053 army cadet corps and 3051 army cadet corps.

Standard First Aid Training

Date: February 24 & February 25

Time: drop off @ 0800* | pickup @ 1600

Location: LHQ

Cadets will participate in a course on standard first aid at the local headquarters (LHQ). Upon completion and passing the course, cadets will be first aid certified and will receive their Standard First Aid certificate.

FTX Cold Dragoons

Date: March 16, 2024

Location: Rundle Park - Picnic Site #6

Cadets will participate in a Cold Weather field training exercise (FTX) where they will learn and put to practice winter survival skills. Cadets will also participate in snowshoeing and toboggan pulling/pushing activities, should snow conditions permit.

SALH Map & Compass

Date: April 17, 2024

Time: drop off @ 1845 | pickup @ 2100

Location: Jefferson Armoury (11630 109 St NW)

Cadets are invited to participate in a Map & Compass themed visit on April 17th. The plan consists of a classroom portion for learning map and compass orienteering, then an outdoor practical lesson.

If time permits, cadets will be given a tour of the SALH vehicles.

Cadets will participate in a joint Area Discretionary Activity (ADA) Orienteering Day with cadets from 3 other cadet units. The day will consist of a beginner instruction course, and orienteering event, followed by a post-game debriefing.

Looking sharp for ACR!

Uniform Workshop

Date: June 09, 2024

Time: drop off @ 0900 | pickup @ 1600

Location: LHQ

In preparation of our ACR, we will be hosting a Uniform Workshop*.

Cadets will be:

  • Ironing uniforms

  • Polishing boots

  • Shaping berets

  • Tying ties

  • Sowing badges

Please bring an iron and ironing board and boot polishing kit and pack a lunch. At the end of the workshop, cadets are encouraged to leave the perfected uniforms at the LHQ until ACR.

ā€‹

Cadets will also be practicing for the ACR parade and parade positions are going to be selected.

*Note that if a cadet cannot attend for the whole day, we still strongly recommend they attend part of it.

Annual Ceremonial Review

Date: June 15, 2024

Time: Cadets drop off @ 0800 | pickup @ 1600

Location: Balwin Community Hall

Our Annual Ceremonial Review is scheduled for Saturday, June 15th and we would be honoured if you would attend. Guests are to be seated by 12:45 PM as the ceremony will start at 1:00 PM sharp. The ceremony will be held at the Balwin Community Hall (12904 74 St NW).

Following the ceremony, the cadets have prepared interactive displays for parents & guests to enjoy. The 2051 Dragoons Parents Committee will also host a BBQ for guests and cadets to enjoy.

Parents, guardians, family members, and member of the public are invited to attend to Annual Ceremonial Review (ACR). Guests are asked to be seated by 12:45 PM and follow directions from adult staff/volunteers for the location of the parade and interactive displays.
